The press coverage was as overwhelming as the video submissions and as comprehensive and varied as the contestants. Within the first 48 hours of launching Careereoki, it was broadcast to 270,000 people. Additionally, the contest, along with all the affiliated events, was picked up by all the major networks in Orlando (Fox, NBC, CBS and ABC). Further, the local daily newspaper ran editorial coverage. And, one of the local news stations came by the advertising agency to interview the Account Manager and included the interview with the Careereoki contest and job fair coverage.
The viral aspect of hosting such a contest in the particular way, via YouTube and the interactive nature of the radio remotes and job fairs, made the event all that much more press worthy. More than radio spots and remotes, the radio media buy was comprehensive and incorporated on-air discussion, website with contest details, banner ads and links to all sponsor sites. All the media placed, coupled with the live remotes and job fairs drew more and more people, hence more and more press each day the contest was running.
Additional sponsorships and affiliations were possible avenues to explore. For example, the local coverage of American Idol, as well as area businesses that offer career-certificate-relevant jobs and apprenticeships started discussions that wouldn’t have been possible before Careereoki started singing the praises of OCPS CTE and WCF.
